dog; he is the ghost dog. At least as far as he is concerned. He has roamed the earth, mainly Europe until recently, terrorizing humanity and making quite a name for himself. Black Dog, Black Shuck, Barghest, Kirk Grim, Shadow Dog, and so on. It didn't stop there-there was legends attached as well; if you are followed by a large black dog at night, keep moving and don't look back or you will die. If you go uphill a street at night, a pack of black dogs will chase you back down and maul you to death if you don't reach the bottom or fall. If you see a black dog with red eyes, you have until it's third bark to get home before your heart stop. All legends terrifying and ending in death. All of which were the bored orchestrations of an ancient being so morphed from his origin he is hardly recognized as a dog. But he isn't that well known among dogs; never bothered with him. His malice was directed to humans. Some rumors state that he was a dog abused by his owners to death and many folklore stories about this subject are referencing him. No one will ever know.
<p>
Rex is a very mysterious dog. Most would claim to be, but none quite to the degree of himself. He speaks very little of his history or motivation, even when pressed for it, even among his pack members, even among lovers. He handles everything calmly, cordially, and smiling in contrast to his sinister reputation. His low, husky, growls and barks can just as easily cause a pleasant tingle in the spine as a frightful one without much change of his tone. His disappointment is met with punishment, but his praise is ever fleeting. He is distant from other dogs, yet intrigued by them. He is an orderly dog that seems to be content with being surrounded by chaos rather than like-minded individuals. Sorting through the contradictions to assemble a personality will prove to be a tiring thing, yet there are constants about him that are clear; his dominance, his poise, mind, and his ego.
<p>
Rex couldn't possibly fill any role in a team but a leader. He has little interest in those who aren't searching for a common goal or can benefit him to reach his goal. He cares little for temporary ideas such as working with others for food or shelter as it does not concern him. He is selfish, but he is also capable; capable of himself, teaching others how to be capable, and bringing out the capabilities that others may not know for themselves. He is a dog that will strike first to bolster the fearsome reputation of his pack, uphold standards that he sets even when he doesn't mean to, he walks with a confident gait that displays his regal attitude. He is an alpha's worst enemy and any pack member's rock.
<p>
The grace in which Rex walks with is quite contradictory to his appearance. He isn't your sleek fox or razor-lined sighthound; rather he is a massive bulky mastiff in every definable way. On top that, he can be rather nightmarish at times; in places of velvet thin fuzz for fur is hardened crocodilian-like obsidian scales and a stubbed tail elongates into a stinger-tipped one. Even then, there is an undeniable charm in the way he carries himself and speaks. Power ripples through every movement he makes, but not in the way most canines are accustomed to in builds like his. He is more often compared to a black panther, lion, or any other big cats than he is a wolf or canine.
<p>
Naturally, one who has lived as long as he has doesn't think much like dogs one is accustomed to; he is wise beyond his ears, many human years, and most living thing's life. It is the primary contributor to his seemingly lethargic demeanor compared to other dogs, especially many other uptight alphas. While he isn't too acquainted to dog-like scenarios, he knows many about general life, war, love, hopes, dreams, and despair; all of these things being universal truths of life that he has seen in cycles time and time again. While his personal mind is sealed tight like a safe, his knowledge is an endless fountain of wisdom any of his pack mates are free to drink plenty from..not they ever will.
<p>
But alas, one of his biggest definers is his biggest setback, and that is his ego. No matter how pleasant and calm he may come across, he is ruthless, selfish, and elitist to the core. He sees all those around him, his pack and others, as simpleminded and primitive creators; the only difference being those he can tolerate and are helpful and those who aren't. Even his own packmates can be on the rather cruel end of his treatment when they cross him. He is not a dog who believes in second chances or sympathy. At his root; he is evil.
However, this truth is why he has set out to form the pack; his soul has grown stale and tired of the limbo it rests in he wants to know what it is like to live and die again; hopefully for good this time. In the wake of human extinction, he migrated across many lands to be here; one of the strongest and most diverse canine populations in the world post-extinction. He abandoned his well known and feared titles for the name Rex for ironic and fitting purposes as it is a commonplace dog name, but also the title of king. First, this was because his main source of entertainment was gone, forcing him to play with members of his own kind. But then Rex had an epiphany; what if the infection that plagued them wasn't a plague? Days are getting hotter and fiercer and the sun is destroying the land; they could simply be adaptations to thrive during the more favorable night. They could be the next level of dogkind needed to survive on their own. But more importantly, they could be the key to reincarnation for him if he finds the right one...
<p>
Rex has been gifted with some special powers over the many years he has been alive. During the night, he takes a form of what can only be described as a Hellhound; growing to the size of a mountain lion, skin to scales, and a long scorpion-like tail. His eyes burn a fiery red that is said to make those who look into them feel drowsy if they stare too long. He also has some illusionary abilities that work their magic best in the moonlight; barely able to befuddle those during daytime and able to warp the atmosphere surrounding him at night. At all times, he bleeds ash rather than blood; thick suffocating stuff that billows in puffs and drips from wounds like sand through an hourglass. When he sustains injuries that would be fatal, he bursts to devil's knot, which he cannot leave and return to among the living until the next moonrise. In place of large canines are even larger serpent-like fangs that make for quite a terrifying snarl.
